Thailand Visas & Entry Requirements Guide

Do You Need a Visa?

Many nationalities can enter Thailand without a visa for short stays (usually up to 60 days) for tourism purposes.

In most cases:

  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date.
  • You may be asked for a return/onward ticket and proof of funds.

Note: Specific countries benefit from visa-free stays, and the list and duration may change — check with the Thai embassy or consulate before traveling or consult official government sources.

Electronic Entry Form (TDAC)

As of May 1, 2025, all foreign travelers entering Thailand must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online at least 72 hours before arrival. This replaces the old paper TM6 arrival card.

Main Visa Types

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

Eligible nationalities can obtain a Visa on Arrival at select airports and land borders:

  • Stay: Up to 60 days
  • Extension: Possible one-time extension (typically +30 days)
  • Requirements: Passport ≥6 months, return ticket, accommodation details, sufficient funds, and TDAC QR code.

VOA eligibility countries are limited and include places such as China; check the official list to confirm.

Tourist Visa (TR)

For visitors who are not eligible for visa-exempt entry, or who want longer stays:

  • Single-entry Visa: Usually 3-month validity from issuance; allows up to 60 days stay.
  • Multiple-entry Visa: 6-month validity; allows multiple 60-day stays.
  • Extension: +30 days if applied in Thailand at Immigration.
  • Typical Requirements:
    • Passport valid ≥6 months
    • Recent photo
    • Completed visa form
    • Proof of return ticket and accommodation
    • Financial proof (commonly around 20,000 THB per person).

Fees: Vary by embassy, but often around ~40–200 USD/ equivalent for single and multiple entries.

💡 Overstaying a tourist visa carries fines, possible deportation, and bans on future entry.

Non-Immigrant Visas (Longer & Purpose-Specific)

These visas suit people planning to work, study, retire, join family, volunteer, or conduct business:

Non-Immigrant B (Business/Work)

  • For employment or business activities in Thailand.
  • Must be obtained at a Thai embassy/consulate before arrival.
  • You’ll also need a Thai work permit after arrival to legally work.
  • Typical documents include passport, employment/ business letters, and adequate financial proof.

Other Non-Immigrant Categories

  • ED (Education Visa): For studying or training.
  • O (Family/Other purposes): Visiting Thai family or volunteering.
  • Retirement Visas (O-A/O-X): Long-stay options for those aged 50+.

Some countries also have special long-term or remote work visas (e.g., Destination Thailand Visa — check current status and requirements).

Important Rules & Tips

Passport Validity

Most visas and entry exemptions require a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date.

Financial Proof

Tourist visa applicants are often required to prove access to funds (e.g., ~20,000 THB per person). Recent policy changes have reinstated these requirements.

Work Restrictions

Tourist and visa-exempt entries do not allow employment in Thailand. Working without the correct visa/permit risks fines, deportation, and future entry bans.

Extensions & Immigration

Most short-stay visas can be extended at the Thai Immigration Bureau within Thailand for a fee.

Recent Changes to Know (2025–26)

📌 Mandatory Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)

All entries now require the online Thailand Digital Arrival Card.

📌 Tourism Entry Fee Delayed

A proposed entry fee for all tourists has been postponed until at least 2026.

📌 Stricter Entry Monitoring

Thai authorities are increasing checks on frequent visa-exempt entries to prevent misuse (e.g., overstays or unauthorized work).

Final Notes

Visa rules and exemptions vary widely by nationality — always check with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in your home country for the most accurate, up-to-date details.

Immigration policies evolve, so confirm requirements before booking travel or submitting applications.
